FAQ

What is your shipping policy?

Our shopping cart charges a flat rate of $8.95 for shipping. That is what we pay to mail a priority mail flat rate box. We can ship most orders in that box and pay the same anywhere in the country. If you live closer and parcel post would cost less and take no longer to get to you, we will ship that way and deduct the difference from your order total. Should we be unable to fit your order in the flat rate box, we still charge only $8.95. We may have to pay more but on a large order we consider the difference to be a sort of volume discount.

I live in Gorham (or nearby), can I pick up my order?

The bad news is no, you can't. I don't have a store and zoning laws won't allow me to have customers visit my home. The good news is that I will deliver your order either to your home or workplace in Gorham or any of the bordering towns. If you drive through Gorham I can meet you someplace downtown. Please call me to make arrangements. Please note that the shopping cart will still charge you for shipping but we will deduct it before your credit card is billed.

What's so special about Beane's of Gorham soaps?

Not only do we make an all natural vegetable oil soap but we make sure the package is attractive as well.  Every bar is wrapped in fabric and cellophane with the ends open so the soap can breathe. There is an attractive identifying label on the front and a product information label on the back.  This means that Beane's of Gorham soaps make wonderful gifts.  Something nice to give that vegetarian who has everything! In fact, with the exception of Oat & Honey, Milk & Honey and Shaving Soap, our soaps are vegan. While we have several novelty items and gift baskets, even simple bars of our natural soap make lovely gifts.

Why Essential oil?

Essential oils are pressed or steam distilled from real plants.  Unlike fragrance oils, they are natural in origin.  Fragrance oils are often produced chemically and may have no relation at all to the substance whose scent they mimic.  Why go to the trouble to use vegetable oil and natural color, only to contaminate the soap with man-made chemicals?

Why Vegetable oil?

Although lard and tallow are the traditional ingredients in homemade soap, today many people believe that vegetable oil soap is gentler to the skin and less likely to clog pores.  Also, lard and tallow are fats derived from pigs and cattle.  As more and more people embrace a vegetarian way of life, this kind of soap makes more sense.  Why refuse to eat a steak and then wash your hands with soap made from the same animal?
